Minibus Speed Limit On Motorways Could Be Cut - 4th February 2010
Minibus, Coach and Lorry drivers could see their motorway speed limits cut under new plans being considered by the Government.
The proposals are being put forward by The Department for Transport who say the changes are needed because new vehicles are fitted with speed limiters and the old ones are not.
This means that while newer HGVs are limited to 56mph older vehicles are able to drive at up to 70 mph on the motorway. Similarly, new Minibuses vehicles with over eight seats are limited to 62.5 mph on the motorway but older vehicles are able to drive at 70 mph.
The speed limit for heavy goods vehicles under 7.5 tonnes would be cut from 70mph to 60mph. Minibuses and small buses and coaches would have a reduced limit of 65mph, down from 70mph.
The proposals are to simplify motorway speed limits for Minibus drivers, coaches and lorries so that everyone has to abide by the same rules regardless of the age of their vehicle.
